Gruen Curvex Precision Ref. 370-650 Art Deco Tank

This Gruen Curvex Precision, Ref. 370-650, is a unique example of Art Deco watchmaking and one of the most iconic designs of its era. Its defining feature is the patented Curvex construction, where both the rectangular “tank” case and the mechanical movement inside are curved to conform to the wearer’s wrist. The case is topped by a unique and highly stylized three-facet “gabled” crystal, enhancing the watch’s distinctive architectural lines. Beneath the crystal, the champagne-colored dial exudes vintage charm, featuring applied gold-tone Arabic numerals in a distinct period font and a rectangular subsidiary seconds dial at the 6 o’clock position. Gold-tone alpha hands sweep across the face, completing the warm aesthetic of this testament to Gruen’s innovative spirit.

Overview

Few watches so perfectly encapsulate the spirit of their era as the Gruen Curvex. To us, it’s a true icon of American industrial design and a landmark piece of horological engineering. In a period defined by the elegance of the Art Deco movement, Gruen achieved something revolutionary: a watch that was not only beautiful to look at, but a masterpiece of ergonomic design that was an absolute joy to wear.

The genius of the Curvex, first patented in 1935, was its solution to a fundamental problem. While many brands were creating curved, rectangular “tank” watches, they were forced to use small, often inaccurate movements inside. Gruen’s brilliant innovation was to create a robust, high-quality movement that was itself curved, allowing every component to be larger and more precise. This movement fit perfectly inside a dramatically curved case, resulting in a timepiece that was both mechanically superior and contoured perfectly to the human wrist. It’s a design that has to be felt to be believed.

This particular Curvex, a Reference 370 from the 1940s, is a truly fantastic and soulful example of this legendary design. It is housed in a handsome 10-karat white gold-filled case, crafted by the renowned Wadsworth company, which gives it a cool, sophisticated luster that is less common than its yellow gold counterparts. The silvered dial is adorned with a full set of stunning, applied yellow gold Arabic numerals in a beautifully stylized Art Deco font. This subtle two-tone effect—the warm gold numerals against the cool white of the case—is incredibly handsome and speaks to the thoughtful design of the period. The classic subsidiary seconds register and delicate leaf hands complete the timeless look.

The condition of this piece is wonderfully honest. The white gold-filled case is in excellent vintage condition, retaining its sharp lines and, most importantly, its signature graceful curve. The dial has aged with a beautiful, even patina, with some light spotting that gives it an immense and authentic character. This is a true survivor, a watch that tells the story of its long and cherished life without saying a word.
